What comes after Cambridge Analytica?
Setting New Rules for Consumer Protection

While consumers repeatedly emphasize in surveys how important their privacy is to them, they often freely disclose personal information on the Internet. How can this apparently paradoxical behaviour be explained? And what has the Cambridge Analytica-Scandal to do with it?  

Especially in the area of data driven industries, there is a systematic imbalance between the possibilities of companies to set the rules and those of consumers to deal with them: While large corporations like Google or Facebook employ top lawyers and the best software and marketing specialists, consumers often know little about technical processes, business models and the legal situation. Cost-benefit considerations are therefore difficult for them.  

Shortly before the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) becomes effective in May 2018 and at a time when the EU Commission accuses Facebook and Twitter of lacking consumer protection, the BMBF-funded research consortium   <Forum Privatheit> invites you to discuss with representatives of politics and business how consumers can protect their privacy in times of Facebook and Cambridge Analytica and which new rules have to be negotiated between the relevant players in politics, business and civil society.
